I just don't understand sometimes... and have to keep reminding myself that I am in Africa!
Franklin usually goes down to get Alex off the bus. He gets "tossed out" in front of our apartment building, so it's just awkward for me to stand down there, by myself, with the boab, who I can only have a limited conversation with anyway and wait for him... especially with the other men who would stare at me for the duration of my visit outside!
I'm convinced that it's that same weird feeling animals probably have at the zoo looking through their cages at all these strange people staring and calling after them... I'm just trying to decide which animal I want to be :o)
So, today as they are coming back up the elevator... you could hear Alex talking a mile a minute before he even gets off and I'm inside the apartment! This is always an indication that something has gone on at school :o) As they are walking in the door, he's telling Franklin that we have to read the note that's inside his backpack. It's apparently, very important! So, we look in his backpack and nothing is there... not even his homework folder, nor the homework log that they do send home each week to tell us what is expected of him. This is the way notes are passed back and forth between the school... we had an episode last week over Alex's lunchbox ~ another crazy story that took a few days of "note passing" to clear up :o) He has a wonderful teacher at the school... we are VERY thankful for her and her patience with Alex and the other children!
So, Alex simply says he doesn't have school anymore... then starts to walk off to go play! Wait a minute... no more school? We looked through his backpack one more time... nothing! So, we sit our six year old down on the couch to try and get the information out of him. We're still confused. They don't celebrate Thanksgiving here; but we did know that he had a few days off around a major Muslim holiday that will be celebrated next week. They are also very paranoid about a swine flu outbreak, for various reasons, and have talked about canceling school over that from time to time.
So, who knows... I'm sure we'll find out tomorrow how long we get to keep Alex home :o) Actually, I've missed the little guy and will be grateful to spend some time together. We're having to study a lot lately and Alex doesn't get home until after 4:00 each day... so it will be good for us to have him around more.
You never know, maybe we'll go on a little adventure... to the zoo!
