Happy Thanksgiving

Today... was a blessed day!  We weren't able to spend Thanksgiving with our immediate family... and miss you ALL terribly; but found some great new friends to hang out and eat way too much with!

Many of you have asked if we could even find a turkey... well, thankfully, I wasn't in charge of that one this year!  The family that had us all over found the turkey and cooked it... it was delicious!  Everything was... we had everyone bring some food and I don't think a casserole was missing :o)  There are some good cooks in Africa!  We were stuffed, which led to wanting to take a nap; however, we got a game of Phase 10 going (sorry, girls... no dutch blitz :o)  We even cranked up some Christmas music... it was great!  After the game, we decided you guys would all be getting ready to watch the parade.  Then, all of a sudden, we heard a lot of commotion coming from the alley...  it was a group of men tying up a cow for tomorrow... or so we thought!  Tomorrow will begin a major Muslim holiday here... the Eid al-Adha or Festival of Sacrifices.  It lasts for several days and sheep (or cows, goats, and even a camel) will be slaughtered and the meat given to the poor.  Well, everyone was watching (not me, of course!) and they decided to go ahead and slaughter this cow!  I'm sorry; but I don't have any pictures of that... I couldn't bare to watch!  It breaks my heart and was so sad!

Once that was over... and Franklin said that they had it cut up in no time... we decided it was time for round two ~ on the food that is!  I can't believe we ate again; but we did.  We started a movie because the children were finishing up one; but shortly after dinner, it was time to go home and end a wonderful day!

I hope that your day was as special as our first Thanksgiving overseas was... may you reflect on the many things we have to be thankful for this year!  We are so very thankful for our family and friends... we love you and miss you all!!

So, from our family to yours...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

The End of School??

Well, as I write this... my sweet, little boy is working on writing sentences and solving math problems at my dining room table in his Transformer pajamas!  It is quite cute...

However, rumor has it, that they won't go back to school until the end of February!  Yes, you read correctly... don't tell your kids about Alex's "winter break"... they will be wanting to move to Africa :o)

Before they start packing their bags though... we're not getting a break!  The school has got this all figured out...  we will wake up each day, log on to the website, gather all of his assignments, and try to get them done and submitted by 3:00.  If you all knew how slow Alex was... and throw in some Arabic lessons for me... we'll be lucky to get them turned in by February :o)

My heart goes out to all of you homeschooling moms right now... many of you are my dear friends and I love you and I'm thinking about you!!  It had been my heart's desire to teach Alex; however, we had decided that the best thing for both of us right now, culturally and for me to progress in Arabic, was to have him in school this year.  I am also very grateful for those of you who love our children and teach them everyday!  We very much miss Alex's teacher right now :o)  He loves her and she has made his adjustment so much easier by being a wonderful, patient teacher.  It takes a special person with a beautiful heart to do both, teach in the school system or homeschool, and I have realized over the past few days how we can take either one for granted... how I can easily take Alex's teacher for granted ~ so Thank You!!

It is a blessing to have Alex home and we are having fun; but I've quickly realized that we will need to have some sort of a "schedule"... if that even exists in Africa, to get our work done!  He will have a few days off, so that will be good, to break us in before we start back in December for the long haul :o)

I can already tell that I'm going to need a nap... and some chocolate!

A Trip to the "Salon"

This one is for my girlfriends... so, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!

It's been a long time since my last haircut... and I desperately needed one!  I had meant to get it cut before we left, thinking it might be difficult to find someone here to cut it; but never did.  So, today I decided to be brave, go out, and find someone to cut my hair!  You're going to love this one...

I decided the bravest I could be, for right now, was to start at the mall.  We live near a nice mall; but most of the shops are expensive compared to the market, so I wasn't sure if I could get my hair cut there.  I had seen several other "salons" ~ a huge stretch for the name I would use for these places here ~ along the streets and alleys; but couldn't get the nerve to go inside one and go through with getting my hair cut.  I have found out that when old, bright colored towels are hung outside a door, then it's a salon where women can get their hair cut.  You know they have to take their veils off, of course, so the door and windows are all covered up to keep people who are walking by from seeing the women with their hair down.  But, if I can't see inside, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to go in or not and knew if I went in, I wasn't going to be let out until they cut my hair :o)

The place in the mall you can see in, sort of, if you stand on the other side of the escalators and at the right angle!  I stood there for a long time giving myself the "pep talk" to go in and ask how much it would cost ~ in Arabic, of course :o)  I have learned a few useful things since we've been here...

So, I went over and stood at the door hoping to be ignored and could just leave, giving myself a pat on the back for making the effort!  However, being that I was surely the only American woman in the mall... that zoo feeling again :o)  I should have been more realistic!  The older woman quickly got off the phone and starting yelling for me to come in (yes, in Arabic and I understood her ~ Yeah!); but she quickly started asking me something that I didn't understand.  Once we get passed greetings, introductions, and simple vocabulary... I'm lost.  Apparently, holding your hair up and pointing at it works as you ask "how much?"  She told me and I asked her again because I really didn't think I understood her correctly, or she had to be mistaken...  $6.00 ~ for a haircut?  You have to be kidding... so they took me to the back of the "salon."

First, this petite young girl pointed to a chair where they were going to "shampoo" or wash my hair.  Arabic lesson:  replace the p with a b and you are saying "wash my hair" :o)  I couldn't really talk to her either; but we did giggle a few times.  I have decided that laughing is the universal "girl" talk around here; isn't it most anywhere?  Once she started, I could have sworn that Helga had gotten a hold of me as hard as she was massaging my head!  She was being very careful though not to let any water run down the side of my face because she didn't want to get it in my eyes or mess up my makeup.  That was thoughtful... During the washing; however, another woman came over and starting asking me if I wanted a manicure, pedicure or eyebrows plucked ~ as best I could gather.  Oh no, I thought... and even though I probably do, I politely said "no, thank you!"  She was touching my face, hands and feet as she tried to convince me that it would be fun and the two girls were laughing now; but I really couldn't handle all of that today, so I politely said "no, thank you!" again.  Thankfully, that appeased her and she left...

Well, I'm not sure what all she washed my hair in; but she finally finished and I had hair left on my head :o) so they wrapped me in a towel and moved me to another chair.  I sat there for a few minutes by myself with a number of thoughts running through my head, then all of a sudden... a young man showed up with a magazine.  No, not a magazine for my reading pleasure, a magazine to pick out a hairstyle.  I knew it was going to be a struggle to let him know that I didn't want much cut off and as I looked at the pictures of the girls in the magazine, I started to get worried.  They were pictures of scary, looking girls you would see on a runway in Paris or New York!  I did NOT want to look like any of them and I didn't know what to do.  So, I said the word for "a little bit" and held up the ends of my wet hair.  There was a picture of a half~way, normal looking girl who had a few layers cut around her face with short bangs, which I didn't really want; but who can really be picky at this moment when you're at the mercy of a young Arab with scissors in his hand??  He started cutting away and a lot of hair was falling to the ground!  When he finished cutting, he started drying... which took him a very long time because I could tell he was getting a little frustrated.  Apparently, my hair wasn't laying quite the way he wanted it to... so he finally gave up and got a hair straightener.  After messing with that for a while, I convinced myself to open my eyes and look... I still had hair left and it actually wasn't so bad :o)  He took his time straightening my hair; but then decided to get the hair dryer back out!  Oh no... I thought... don't do that!  But knew it would be rude to start yelling "no" at him... so, he turned it on; but the setting was on cool.  Apparently, that's a new hair tip girls... the cool air sets your hair from the heat of the straightener.  Who knew??

Anyway, the young man seemed pleased and I was relieved... relieved to have this new cultural experience over with!  I have more layers than I had hoped; but overall it's not bad from what I was expecting.

So, girls... come visit me and I'll take you to the "salon" :o)  I looked on my way out and the manicures are really cheap... but I'll save that for another day!

So... what do you think?

The Zoo... Part II

To all who want an update on the zoo... I mean school situation :o)

School was canceled on Thursday... to the delight of our six year old!  Apparently, the principal decided they needed to "test" the on-line learning system before a decision was made by the government to close schools for a longer period.

All would have gone smoothly, except for the fact that the administration had relied on a six year old to remember his user name and password!  So, no one could get into the website and do the class work.  His teacher found some work for them to do on an educational website and Alex thought that was a lot of fun!

Who wouldn't enjoy having school in their pajamas?

Here is Franklin and Alex...
trying every variation of a password
known to mankind :o)
Who looks more frustrated?

Alex decorating a silly turkey for Thanksgiving...
His favorite color is green,
so he ended up being a green feathered bird :o)

Hmmm... concentrating hard :o)

Learning is so much FUN!!

It's A Zoo Around Here

I just don't understand sometimes... and have to keep reminding myself that I am in Africa!

Franklin usually goes down to get Alex off the bus.  He gets "tossed out" in front of our apartment building, so it's just awkward for me to stand down there, by myself, with the boab, who I can only have a limited conversation with anyway and wait for him... especially with the other men who would stare at me for the duration of my visit outside!

I'm convinced that it's that same weird feeling animals probably have at the zoo looking through their cages at all these strange people staring and calling after them... I'm just trying to decide which animal I want to be :o)

So, today as they are coming back up the elevator... you could hear Alex talking a mile a minute before he even gets off and I'm inside the apartment!  This is always an indication that something has gone on at school :o)  As they are walking in the door, he's telling Franklin that we have to read the note that's inside his backpack.  It's apparently, very important!  So, we look in his backpack and nothing is there... not even his homework folder, nor the homework log that they do send home each week to tell us what is expected of him.  This is the way notes are passed back and forth between the school... we had an episode last week over Alex's lunchbox ~ another crazy story that took a few days of "note passing" to clear up :o)  He has a wonderful teacher at the school... we are VERY thankful for her and her patience with Alex and the other children!

So, Alex simply says he doesn't have school anymore... then starts to walk off to go play!  Wait a minute... no more school?  We looked through his backpack one more time... nothing!  So, we sit our six year old down on the couch to try and get the information out of him.  We're still confused.  They don't celebrate Thanksgiving here; but we did know that he had a few days off around a major Muslim holiday that will be celebrated next week.  They are also very paranoid about a swine flu outbreak, for various reasons, and have talked about canceling school over that from time to time.

So, who knows... I'm sure we'll find out tomorrow how long we get to keep Alex home :o)  Actually, I've missed the little guy and will be grateful to spend some time together.  We're having to study a lot lately and Alex doesn't get home until after 4:00 each day... so it will be good for us to have him around more.

You never know, maybe we'll go on a little adventure... to the zoo!

Just Like Daddy

The other night, Alex was getting ready for bed.  He came out of his room with just his pajama pants on and so I told him to go back and put a shirt on.  He looked at me with those pretty, blue eyes and said "Daddy doesn't wear a shirt to bed, so I don't want to wear a shirt to bed anymore... I want to be just like Daddy!"  He very much is, in more ways than one, and I am blessed to have two "men" in the house!  Before we know it... he'll be shaving :o)

Getting ready for bed is a lot of fun... but a process with Alex.
First a bath, then he brushes his teeth.
He moves really slow in doing everything!

Then we have to make sure all of his bedtime buddies
are ready to go to sleep with him!
He wanted you to meet his "friends"...
from left to right there's
Lamby, Mr. Turtle,
Camel Spit, T~Rex,
Wait a minute... that's my Chick-fil-A cow!
Crabby, Mr. Ot, and
Nemo gets to sleep on the bed...
What a lucky fish!

Oh... and don't forget the frog blanket!
He is convinced that they leap off
during the night and have a party in his room :o)
I haven't heard any noise coming from there yet...

Finally, after all that...
we read one book and say goodnight prayers.
Then it's time for Alex to close his eyes
and go to sleep...

SWEET DREAMS, ALEX!!

My Beloved

There is a collection of love poems in the Bible... Song of Solomon.  It is a story between a man and his bride, celebrating their relationship to one another and their marriage before God.  It is a picture of trust and strength, devotion and beauty.

As Franklin and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary this week, so much was different.  We couldn't go to our favorite place to eat.  We didn't have a babysitter for Alex.  Franklin couldn't even find a place to buy flowers!  Wait a minute... that was the same :o)

However, as we talked about all that is different now, we were reminded through this book that one thing never changes... our love for one another and the union God has created between us will always remain.

So Franklin... may you always know my love as we walk through the valleys and mountaintops together in life and may these words always be true of me and the promise I made to the Lord before you many years ago!

"My Beloved"
You whom my soul loves...
I delight in you ~ the voice of my beloved...
let me hear your voice calling after me!
You are mine and I am yours...
I will only seek after you... and will hold you and not let you go!
On the day of our wedding, my heart was filled with gladness!
You have captivated my heart... my love will only be for you!
One may ask "Why is your beloved greater than any other beloved?"
I will answer... "Because he is my beloved, my friend!"
Set me as a seal upon your heart, for love is strong as death;
Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it!
(Excerpts from Song of Solomon)
